The City of Trees Pipes and Drums (formerly known as the "Sleekit Beasties") have been performing in the Treasure Valley for over seven years.  The band is made up of nine bagpipers and six drummers.  The youngest member of the band is 16-years-old and is a student at Boise’s Capital High School.  Over the years the band has performed in numerous parades and at local events including the annual Treasure Valley Highland Games, 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games, Race to Robie Creek, Gunfighter Skies Air show, Robbie Burns Night, and St. Patrick’s Day.

Band Member Bios
John McDade

John McDade (Pipe Major & co-Founder): Mr. McDade is a world traveler and recognized authority on belly dancing. Although born in Scotland, he learned his piping in Idaho, as he relates that after two years of being asked if he was a piper and replying "No!", he finally took lessons. Along with Ron "The Vicar" Elerick, McDade formed the original Sleekit Beasties band. John is considered by some an accomplished teacher and resourceful pipe major. The rest of us think he's just plain surly.

Ken Wallace Ken Wallace (Pipe Sergeant): Ken is without a doubt the most stable member of the band, except when he loses it. It is doubtful anyone has actually seen Ken lose it, but the legend persists that he can. Some believe it is his time in the military, some think it is his career as a prison guard, and some speculate it's his prowess as a big game hunter. Regardless of the source of Ken's mysterious potential for getting medieval on friend or foe alike, he's a pretty nice guy and a great piper.
Gene Fisher Gene Fisher (Drum Sergeant): Gene started his drumming career 13 years ago with the Boise Highlanders. His first choice was the pipes, but this was crushed after he was told it would take him a year to become a piper. So drums
became his second choice. During his stint in the Highlanders he competed in the Sacramento and Utah Scottish games. Leaving the band in 1998, Gene focused on starting a family and put the sticks up for awhile. Under pressure and receiving dirty looks from John McDade, Gene decided to join the Beasties in 2004 and became drum sergeant the following year. He had to retrain himself in what was the left and right stick and where the batteries went. In his free time he enjoys being a daddy to his two beautiful daughters, eating haggis mixed with kimchee and working on his Christopher Walken.
Eddie Hart Eddie Hart (piper): Eddie is, arguably, the most soulful piper in the band, which is ironic because he rarely wears any shoes, even in the rain. He plays "Lochaber No More" on our new CD "DEEP ROOTS" and is known - and feared - for his sense of humor. Holding a black belt in Jujutsu, Aikido, Judo, and Silambam, as well as world championship titles in Capoeira and Savate, Eddie carries himself with a mirthful "I'm gonna git you, sucka!" attitude that just makes you want to give him a hug.
Tod McKay

Tod McKay (piper): Tod has been playing the bagpipes for seven years.  His first instructor was Ron Lopez of the Boise Highlanders. He officially joined the band in 2005 and his first performance was at the annual Robbie Burns Night. A few highlights of Tod’s piping resume include attending the Coeur d’Alene Summer School of Piping and Drumming and workshops in Portland taught by World-Champions Alasdair Gillies and Bruce Gandy. Another highlight is performing with Angie McKay (Tod’s wife) who has been Highland Dancing since the age of 11. Angie was originally taught by Marianna McKenzie-Day, President, Portland Highland Games Association. Several of McKenzie-Day’s students have gone on to win Highland Dance World Championships in Scotland. Some of you might recognize Tod from his past occupation as a television celebrity. He owns two Emmys. Who knew?

Eric Eric (piper): Eric began his bagpiping journey back in 2004 when he was only in sixth grade. For two yers Eric played and practiced with the band before being made an official band member in 2007 right before the band's appearance at the annual Burns Nicht. According to Eric, his fondest memory occured at the 2008 highland games when he beat pipe major John McDade in the Grade four piping competion.  Eric is now a shophmore at Boise's Capital High School.
Josh White Live in Scotland!

Josh White (piper): Josh came to the Sleekit Beasties in April of 2007, and they haven’t been able to get rid of him since.  Balancing piping with being a husband, father, history teacher and high school coach, skiing in the winter and hiking in the summer has been a challenge for him, but an extremely rewarding one. It seems that most of his time the last two years has been spent doing that piping thing.  We hope his practice pays off one day.  Maybe if he would shut up and quit goofing off with Bob during practice he might learn to play a tune or two.  But he says the Beasties/City of Trees pipers and drummers are some of his best friends and he enjoys all the ribbing he gets.  He hopes one day to write a suite named McDade’s Belly Dancer, complete with notes and everything.  Maybe even harmony!  He better write something better than his last effort, a jig, The Trotternish Wind (formerly known as the Uig Pier Pub). He wants to thank the fellas at the “Pub at the Pier” in Uig, Isle of Skye and the gale-force winds on the Trotternish Peninsula  for his inspiration. Josh is married to Monica, the most patient and understanding woman in his world, putting up with his countless hours of practice chanter noise and the aroma of uisge beatha and the Thursday nights, Saturday mornings and other gigs away from home. Monica considers herself a piping widow every once in a while.  His two sons, William and Brodie, are enthusiastic about his piping and they hope one day to form the Wee White Pipe Trio. **JTW- Piobaire na Cú

Bob & his smallpipes at the Wee House of Malin Bob McMichael (piper): Dr. McMichael began his pipe odyssey in August 2007. Having played woodwinds since elementary school Bob found the pipes completely alien, and pipe music even aliener. His propensity to drool while blowing has generated substantial concern from anonymous band members, whose frequent good-natured yet unsigned Post-Its on Bob's windshield offer sincere suggestions on curing this unsightly damp handicap. As yet unsolved, the drooling remains a welcomed mitigating factor in Bob's soaring self-esteem, for few can take him seriously while the front of his t-shirt is soaking wet. Despite the excess expunged saliva, Bob took the aggregate award in the Grade 5 piping competition at the 2008 Treasure Valley Highland games.
Tim Eld Tim Eld (piper): It was a dark and stormy night on the 29th day of June in the year of 1956 when I was expelled from my mothers womb into the world. Cold, naked and penniless. It was a hardscrabble existence.....Oh you said a short bio, okay. Here are the stats. I am married to my wife Pam going on 23 years. Have 2 daughters, 4 grandsons, 2 dogs and a cat. Living in Nampa, self employed as a does-all home contractor. My interests are woodworking, photography (both since high school), square dancing ( I am a licensed square dance caller), fireworks shows (Pam and I are certified pyrotechnitions), scuba diver (recently certified), spending time at our cabin at Karney Lakes and kilt making.
About 6 or 7 years ago the voice of the motherland called to me and said wear the kilt. I resisted but the voice persisted. I relented and bought my first utilikilt in 2004. I went to my first highland games that year and discovered Wee Bit O Scotland. The the voices said play the pipes and so I began lessons with John McDade. I became a member of the band in April 2008. My next ambition is to make a set of bagpipes.
  Noelle Diederich (piper):
Rhonda Cramer Rhonda Cramer (bass drummer): Rhonda L. Thorne Cramer is the bass drummer for the band. She has a Master's Degree in English literature. She has taught at George Fox, Treasure Valley and Boise State, and is under consideration for CWI. She is proud of her Scottish heritage, and enjoys the tradition that a pipe band represents. Her favorite times are when the band is honoring veterans, carrying on the fine alliance between piping and the military.
Dennis McLaughlin Dennis McLaughlin (snare drummer): Dennis McLaughlin has been playing drums for over 29 years and has been playing Scottish Drum for the last 5 years.  After a learning stint with the Boise Highlanders under the watchful eye of Locke Nuttall, Dennis felt the call to be a Beastie!  Little did he know that someday he would be part of the City of Trees Pipes and Drums.  Dennis also volunteers with the Boise City Fire Department Pipes and Drums as a Drum Mentor where he is assisting the drum line with their new endeavor.  Being an American member of the MacLachlan clan, Dennis plays with a zeal that comes from a fine Celtic heritage.
Marty Marty (snare drummer):
Ronnie Young Ronnie Young (snare drummer):
